Cameron, William Bleasdell: 1862-1951. Arrived in West, 1881; survivor of the Frog Lake massacre, 1885; in service of the HBC and of the Dominion government; for a time lived in USA where he edited Forest and Stream; "discovered" Charles M. Russell, the cowboy artist, when he purchased 12 paintings as covers for the magazine; founded The signal of Vermilion, Alberta; contributed stories to many magazines based on Native life and fur-trade experiences (Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, March 5, 1951; Morgan, Canadian men and women of the time, 1912; Who's who in Western Canada). // Wister, Owen: 1860-1938. Born in Philadelphia; studied at Harvard and in Paris; lawyer; writer, most famous for The Virginian, published in 1902. // Some material has been added; title was changed at Cameron's request. Wister's foreword, dated 1929, was written for an edition which was not published. Also published, 5th edition, with new foreword by Hugh A. Dempsey, Wister's foreword to the 1st edition, and Cameron's foreword to the 4th edition, Edmonton: Hurtig Publishers, 1977 (xxiii, [3], 225p.).
